support for students

When you’ve moved on from school, it’s good to know there are people ready to help and encourage you in a new environment.

We have a dedicated team of people on hand to help you make the most of your time with us. All students have individual needs and supporting them is our priority.

Personal Tutors
As a full time student you have your own personal tutor who gives you help, support and advice. Every student is different, so your personal tutor agrees with you what to aim for and helps you achieve it. Your tutor will help you track your progress and give you advice on any personal issues or concerns.

Get job ready!
Our personal tutors and guidance staff work with you to prepare for employment or to help you plan your next steps. Annual careers events keep students in touch with a range of national and local employers and sometimes offer mock interviews to students to prepare them for the real thing!

Higher Education
We arrange for you to attend annual conferences to meet university teachers and admissions tutors, and learn more about the options open to you.

Financial Advice and Support
If you have any questions about course or travel costs, our Student Services team can offer advice, including information about the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), Learner Support Fund, and Adult Learning Grant (ALG). To read the EMA Contract (pdf file) please click here.
To download a copy of the Financial Support Guide please click here.

Health Advice
We have our own College nurse who can give you confidential advice and information on a full range of health issues.

Welfare Advice and Counselling
Specialist staff advise on welfare issues and how to deal with any problems that may affect your progress as a student. Our counselling service can help you with emotional, family, health and financial problems. The team work in a private and confidential setting.

Supported Learning
It helps to tell us about any disability or learning difficulty on the application form so we can plan how to meet your needs from the beginning. You can have specialist support while you are on a mainstream programme. A more detailed leaflet is available on request.

We are committed to improving learning opportunities for everyone. If you would like to discuss any aspect of access or study support before you apply, please contact the Learner Support Team and arrange a visit.

We also have a lot of experience in supporting people who have medical problems or mental health issues. We are available to discuss your support needs confidentially.

Help with Literacy and Numeracy
Help is on hand if you need extra support with literacy and numeracy, IT, learning and study skills, or if English is not your first language. One to one support is available for students with dyslexia and other specific learning difficulties.
